SPIRITS were high and the volume of cheers even higher as Bournemouth Regatta procession made its way from Kings Park.

The date was August 5, 1979, when 170 entries, including many decorated floats, made their way to town amid roaring cheers of the ever swelling crowds.

One of the only sounds to be heard over the cheerful cries of the spectators was the ear-splitting booms of the cannon onboard the Jolly Roger.

The pirate ship, manned by Blandford Young Farmers’ Club, had been built using farmyard odds and ends.

Judges voted a float by Bournemouth Telephones as overall winner, and second was a float by Dingles the department store.

Top band was the Poole Scouts Band and the best majorettes were the South Coast Rangerettes, said the judges.
