BOURNEMOUTH has been ranked in the top ten of most popular 'staycation' spots in the UK.

The Dorset seaside town came in at number six on the list of most popular family hotspots, in a survey compiled by Premier Inn and based on summer 2019 booking data.

London, Glasgow and Edinburgh topped the list, with Manchester and Dover – with its access to mainline Europe – coming fourth and fifth.

After Bournemouth came Liverpool, Newcastle, Southampton and Exeter.

A Premier Inn spokesman said: "While the school holidays might mean a trip abroad for many, using the school break to explore more of the UK is a great idea. Just a glance at our list of the ten most popular family staycation destinations for 2019 tells you how varied the UK is.

"There’s no surprise London tops the list with its rich history, landmarks and huge number of things to do, but it’s great to see regional destinations like Bournemouth so high up the list too.

"We hope our findings will provide inspiration for any families unsure of where to go this year."
