LIFEBOAT volunteers and police were called after a man jumped into the sea.

The man leapt from the "donut groyne" on Brighton seafront on Saturday evening.

Once he was back on shore the man was given medical care by the crew of the lifeboat, assisted by police, until South East Coast Ambulance Service crews arrived.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "A man jumped in the water by the donut groyne on Brighton beach. He later got out.

"Police attended the scene and made sure he was safe."

The incident was one of four which Brighton Lifeboat attended across Saturday evening.

The volunteer crew towed a broken-down yacht back to Brighton Marina and joined in the search for two missing people who were later found safe.

Roger Cohen, station manager of Brighton Lifeboat, said: “Saturday night was a busy evening which saw four of our volunteer crew stay on station throughout the night to ensure the lifeboat was ready at a moment’s notice to help anyone in need.”

The crew also spent the evening encouraging party-goers to stay safe by staying out of the sea at high tide.
