A WIMBORNE vet is warning rabbit owners to stay vigilant in order to protect their pets from a potentially fatal summer condition called flystrike.

Flystrike is caused by flies which lay their eggs on a rabbit’s body. The eggs hatch out into maggots that feed from a rabbit’s skin and, if not treated, can cause death within just 24 hours.

A recent increase in flystrike admissions across Medivet’s group of practices has prompted lead vet Mary Abarno to urge vigilance.

“During the warmer weather we recommend owners to carry out daily checks through their rabbit’s fur to look for any sign of eggs or maggots,” she said.

“Rabbits that are overweight, elderly or lame are more susceptible. These rabbits may have grooming challenges where urine and faeces may stick to the rear end causing the fur to matt creating a perfect home for flies. If there is any doubt whatsoever we would urge owners to bring their rabbits in straight away for a quick check.”

If the rabbit is suffering from the condition, it is likely to be in discomfort and should be handled with care. Medical care would typically include a thorough examination and emergency treatment. This would be followed by a course of antibiotics to prevent secondary infection. If caught early, the animal can make a full recovery.
