AN inquest into the deaths of two men killed in a Tiger Moth plane crash is due to start in Bournemouth this morning(Mon).

Passenger Peter Geoffrey Stacey, 67, from Shaftesbury and pilot Christopher Harvey Nicholls, 64, from Blandford died near the Compton Abbas airfield on August 26 2017.

The inquest will examine the circumstances of the crash, which happened as Mr Stacey took part in a so-called air experience flight.

Coroner Stephen Nicholls will hear expert evidence about the plane and will also hear from witnesses and others involved in the investigation which followed the incident.

A report has already been published by the Air Accident Investigation Branch which revealed the plane's engine failed.

It said witnesses heard and then saw the aircraft climbing slowly at low airspeed, with the engine “sounding awful and misfiring” before it descended “corkscrewing down”.

The aircraft crashed into a crop field and caught fire.

Despite the efforts of the Compton Abbas fire and rescue service, the two men could not be saved.

The inquest, to be held in the coroner's court at Bournemouth town hall, is expected to last all week.
