MORE than 200kg of stinking butchered meat was left dumped on an Upton pavement in the heat throughout Tuesday.

The raw goods were pouring out of a large white builders bag at the top of Policeman's Lane.

Various cuts and types of meat were in the bag, with juices flowing down the road towards Watery Lane.

Residents reported seeing the items on Tuesday morning and contacted the council, but then complained that the items remained their in the sweltering conditions all day, attracting flies and creating a "vile" smell.

Shannon Day, who lives in Robin Close off Policeman's Lane, said her partner saw the bag on the side of the road shortly after 6am.

"Juices started flowing out of the bag. It was just disgusting," said Ms Day.

"People have phoned the council but no one on their end of things seems to be doing anything about it.There were children walking home from school having to go right by it. It covered the whole of the pavement."

She said the meat looked "absolutely awful" and that the stench was "absolutely vile."

Mike Moon, Head of Waste Operations at Dorset Council, said the incident was being regarded as a fly tip. "Given the type and amount of waste, it’s most likely this was dumped by a rogue trader and should have been disposed of using a commercial food waste collection," he said.

Officers from Environmental Health assessed the incident shortly after receiving the report and determined that, while unpleasant, the contents of the bag did not represent an environmental health hazard, he said.

"However, there were concerns that the weather could escalate the situation so, as soon as a suitable vehicle became available a crew was dispatched, removing around 240kg of rotting meat by hand. This was then disposed of with the regular black bin rubbish we collect.

"I’d like to personally thank the Wareham depot crew who cleared up this mess – it was a thoroughly unpleasant job that nobody would have to do if some people disposed of their waste responsibly. If anyone has any information about this incident, we would kindly ask them to contact us via www.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk/flytipping or by calling 01305 221040.”
