It wouldn’t have been a good day for those scared of bugs - but that didn’t stop the pupils of Hillbourne Community First School from having a ball.

The children transformed themselves into spiders, beetles and ladybirds for an ugly bug ball, held at the school in Poole on July 20, 1999.

The party, for 80 reception year children, raised £200 for the Ladybird Appeal to build a £1.3 million breast cancer unit at Poole Hospital.

The school’s then-early years co-ordinator Caroline Davies told the Echo at the time: “We sold raffle tickets and ladybird fairy cakes for 10p each and had donations for wearing fancy dress.”
