THEY recommend neve tor work with children and animals – but one event mixed both with great success.

The 25th Fordingbridge Pet Show and Gymkhana was celebrated in style on June 2, 1979, with large crowds and a then-record entry of almost 500.

A marmalade cat, Liddy, owned by Mrs D Ayres of Damerham, had the opposition licked by winning the top cat award as well as the cup for the best of the show.

She shared the limelight with Duckworth the Duck, who was brought along by six-year-old Sally Mckie, of Pittton, and received an award as the most unusual pet.

The popular dog show attracted 230 entries – 25 per cent up on the previous year. Top pedigree dog was Dorsey, a 14-month-old cocker spaniel that belonged to Andrea Shaw of Netheravon.
