SKATERS came out in their droves as efforts to raise money to refurbish a Poole skatepark took a step forward.

Members of the Baiter Skatepark Redevelopment Fund organised a skate jam and family fun day to provide a boost to their fundraising work.

Last year, the team began their mission to raise a total of £500,000 to carry out a full revamp of the facilities.

The skate jam, which took place at the end of June, raised almost £2,000 in a single day.

The event was the first competition at the park for more than 10 years.

A spokesperson for the organising team said: "The event went really well and raised a lot of money for the cause.

"It was a great family fun event and everyone there enjoyed what was on offer."

Attendees took part in a whole day of skateboard competitions and demonstrations as well as fun for the children and their families in the community, with activities ranging from bouncy castles to Nerf wars and face painting.

The first event was for skateboarders only but future events will be run for scooters and BMX riders once more funds have been raised.

A major financial boost for the refurbishment specifically was secured through £100,000 from a community infrastructure levy (CIL) bid.

This pot of funding is provided by local authorities, who receive the money from developers as a condition on certain planning permissions.

The Baiter Skatepark Redevelopment Team have also organised two park clean ups where all the park users litter picked the area and repainted all of the ramps to avoid further rust.

The skatepark has been left to reach a poor state of repair and the volunteer team hope to push the project forward with help from BCP Council and local youth workers to bring the community together.
