A VISION for a new £1.75 million arts centre at a former farm has taken a step forward.

Proposals to convert redundant agricultural buildings in Sherborne into the new arts space were discussed at a public meeting attended by around 180 members of the public.

It was explained how Barton Farm could be turned into a major arts centre and permanent home for Arts Link within the next three years.

The brainchild of local businessman Joe Benjamin, the ‘Art Farm’ has the backing of Arts Link and the Art Society, the Sherborne Castle Estates, and town mayor Jon Andrews.

Mr Benjamin, who chairs the Sherborne Regional Community Arts Centre Committee, established to oversee the project, has worked with fellow trustees to draw up detailed proposals for the 11,000 sq ft space, which involve converting a complex of redundant agricultural buildings to create a vital facility that fosters wider talent in the arts.

Arts Link chairman Colin Lloyd was on hand to explain that a permanent home for his members would also create opportunities for local artists, artisans, musicians and others to work and display their creative output thanks to the provision of workshops, classes, courses and exhibition space.

David Drummond of architects Reed Holland explained the plans to the audience before former chairman of the council Peter Shorland set out the benefits for the town.

The overall development could cost up to £1.75 million.

Rental income from the workshops at the Art Farm and Arts Link would mean the scheme would be self-financing in the long term.

Mr Benjamin said: “All those involved in this proposal have specialist expertise, which they have brought to bear to ensure the long-term success of this venture, while providing the town with a huge benefit, not just in terms of culture and the arts, but also as a catalyst in boosting the town’s economy for the future, an essential factor in safeguarding the interests of our young people and the coming generations.”

Arts Link chairman Colin Lloyd said: “The Art Farm presents us with the opportunity to establish a permanent home for Arts Link after a long peripatetic existence, while also creating a wide range of opportunities for professional and amateur artists across all disciplines, from sculpture and music to video art and painting. Together with the town’s other vibrant cultural developments, this has the potential to make Sherborne a major regional arts hub.”
