POLICE and fire crews cordoned off a Bournemouth road on Sunday evening to deal with a suspect package found there.

Witness Michael Brown, a pub manager, whose home overlooks the scene said: "I went out at about 8.45pm and came back around 10.30pm and as I pulled into the top of the road there was just blue lights everywhere.

"There were four fire engines and four or five police cars and so I asked one of the people there what was happening and they said 'I'm not allowed to tell you'."

He then noticed firefighters wearing facemasks and they remained on scene until 12.20am on Monday morning.

Dorset & Wilts Fire and Rescue said: "At 9.19pm yesterday (Sunday) crews from Springbourne, Westbourne and Poole attended reports of a suspect package in St Peters Road, Bournemouth."

Group Manager Andy Cole, who attended the incident said: “Firefighters worked quickly and safely to carry out testing on the package and confirmed it was not hazardous. The incident was then handed over to the police.”

Dorset Police have been contacted for details.
