A BOURNEMOUTH Wetherspoon has been evacuated this afternoon after a fire.

Fire crews were called to the Moon in the Square at 2.30pm.

Five fire engines, an aerial ladder platform and an officer are at the scene.

However, the platform is not currently being used. Fire crews appear to be paying specific attention to the rear of the pub.

Exeter Road is closed and police are at the scene. A spokesperson from Dorset Police said officers were contacted by the fire service just after 2.30pm.

Patrons in Wetherspoon said they smelled "electrical burning" before alarms sounded.

One customer, who asked to remain anonymous, said: "At first people didn't want to leave but then staff came around and started trying to urge people to leave their tables.

"Everyone remained quite calm and the fire service were here very quickly."

The fire crews began to leave the scene at around 3.30pm.

Moon in the Square remains closed at present, however, staff expect the pub to reopen later today.
