THE mother of a little boy from Ringwood will take part in a tandem skydive this weekend to raise money for her terminally ill son.

Jon Tarrant-Heckford, 11, was diagnosed with the incurable metabolic disorder Sanfilippo Syndrome just before his fourth birthday.

The condition affects around 1 in 85,000 people in the UK and blocks the breakdown of complex sugars in the body, causing them to build up and destroy brain cells, leaving children unable to walk, talk or swallow.

Jon's parents have been told by Great Ormond Street Hospital that he is unlikely to reach his teenage years.

On Saturday, Jon’s mum Lorraine and her friend Shaun White will complete their first ever tandem skydives at Old Sarum.

The pair hope to raise £3,000 for a new wheelchair for Jon and so far £540 in donations has been raised.

A fundraising page has been set up on the crowdfunding platform Go Fund Me.

On the page, Shaun says: “Jon is a happy and cheerful little soul with a wonderful sense of humour but as the disease has progressed this has begun to change. As Jon’s condition deteriorates, his mobility will diminish until it is no longer possible for him to move unaided.

“Constant fundraising for the additional equipment required for this eventuality is ongoing, but what Jon needs most of all right now is suitable transport so that Jon and his family can still enjoy days out together and make lasting happy memories. “

Last year, Rob Forrester-Addie made survived a parachute malfunction during a Tandem Skydive at Netheravon in aid of Kisses 4 Jon.

He said: “They have never done anything like this before, but Lorraine said that if I could do it at 78 years old, they should be OK at their age.”
