A SCOUT who suffered a head injury was evacuated off Brownsea Island by RNLI volunteers on Tuesday – hours after visiting the Old Lifeboat Station with his troop.

The young casualty had been staying on the island when he was hurt just after 9pm. RNLI crews were called out to take two paramedics from the lifeboat station to the island.

One member of the crew joined the paramedics once the boat arrived at the dock and the three were taken to the camping area, which lies towards the south.

The child was then brought back to the landing pier by the castle on a stretcher and taken back to Poole, where an ambulance was waiting.

RNLI volunteer helmsman Jonathan Clark said: "Conditions in the harbour were reasonably calm. However, it was a dark night with a slight north westerly breeze.

"As the lifeboat steadily brought the casualty and paramedics back to the station between the quays, the dolphin who has been in and the about the harbour these past few days popped up and swam alongside.

"Earlier in the day the Scout group had visited the Old Lifeboat Station on the quay, discovering the history and the work that the lifeboat crews do.

"Who would have of thought some 12 hours later, one of the group would have needed a lifeboat to bring them ashore.

"It's been a busy few days for all at the station, with a variety of jobs.

"We will always be there to help."
