CONTROVERSIAL proposals to build dozens of homes in a north Dorset village have been approved.

Despite warnings that it would destroy the “picturesque oasis of peace” of Okeford Fitzpaine, Dorset Council backed development of the site off Castle Lane.

Subject to final details of the scheme being approved, AJ Developments will now be able to build 27 homes on the site next to Castle Cottage.

The firm had originally proposed the construction of 31 homes on the site but scaled back its ambitions in February ahead of its consideration by North Dorset District Council’s planning committee.

Councillors backed the scheme, which would see 10 ‘affordable’ houses built, but this was subject to this contribution being confirmed.

Earlier this month the agreement between Dorset Council and AJ Developments was signed and was followed by the council granting planning permission.

As well as confirming the contribution, the legal document requires the developer to pay half of its agreed community payments before anyone moves in to any of the houses.

Concerns had been raised about the impact development of the site would have with Paul Orssich, the owner of Castle Cottage, saying the estate would “massively detract” from the entrance to the village.

He said: “I am astonished, on reading the comments by the local residents, that not one is in favour of developing this green field site when alternative brown field sites are begging for development.

“The whole character of Okeford Fitzpaine as a picturesque oasis of peace would be lost forever by the proposed development.”

North Dorset councillors provisionally approved the scheme in February, despite the concerns of people living in the village.

Before any work can start, Dorset Council will need to approve ‘reserved matters’ applications confirming final details of the development.
