STORAGE space above a library could be converted into a two-bedroom flat if a council approves its own application.

BCP Council has submitted plans to convert the vacant second floor of Ensbury Park Library in Bournemouth which it says will contribute to the need for more housing in the area.

The second storey of the Columbia Road building has been used as storage space for the library and the council says this will be replaced by the removal of the internal staircase.

A statement submitted on behalf of the council says the location of the building makes it suitable for part-conversion into residential use.

“The applicant considers the site to be highly sustainable evidenced by the public transport links and the provision of local amenities such as Hill View Primary Academy and local shops including a pharmacy and Co-op all in walking distance,” it says.

“Public open space at Redhill Park is also within walking distance and there is availability of on-street parking on Beswick Avenue for residents and visitors.”

One parking space will be provided for the flat on-site.

Council planning officers will consider the application in the coming weeks.
