TENS of thousands of people visited a festival in Bournemouth this weekend for rugby, live music and a series of hotly-contested sporting tournaments.

More than 30,000 visitors attended this year’s Bournemouth 7s, making it the biggest year yet for the popular three-day event. The festival was hosted for the first time in 2008.

Former English rugby union player James Haskell played a DJ set at the new VIP Colourseum venue on Saturday night.

British rapper, singer and TV personality Professor Green was due to perform for the last night of the festival yesterday.

This year, those who attended the event had a choice of new stages to visit, including Ya Mum’s House, the Carlsberg Danish Garden and the Funky Forest.

Yesterday afternoon, Roger Woodall, the founder of Bournemouth 7s, said one of his highlights was the VIP Colourseum Colour Party, which featured confetti and inflatables.

“We are over the moon with the 2019 event,” he said.

“James Haskell was amazing on Saturday and brought the house down.

“The whole festival was jumping up and down. We were all just absolutely thrilled by it.

“We’re looking forward to another brilliant day and evening with Professor Green on stage and the winners of our rugby, netball, volleyball, hockey and dodgeball tournaments announced.”

The results of the 7s competition were due to be announced yesterday evening.

However, last year’s winners Speranza22 were due to face off against the Shredded Ducks during Sunday afternoon.

The Viper 10 Bournemouth Lions, the Jamaica 7s National Team and the UK Army 7s Rugby team were among those who played during the bank holiday weekend.

Festival goer Louise Foley said: “It’s an unbelievably colourful, beautiful event with top-class sport by day and so many amazing arenas to visit at night.

“The festival vibe is so happy and full of like-minded people.

“It’s like nothing I’ve experienced before.

“I attended Bournemouth 7s back in 2010 and it’s grown so much and transformed creatively into something absolutely incredible.”
