AN ABERGELE missionary, preacher, rapper and teacher has created a comic book reimagining biblical figures as super heroes.

David’s Mighty Men: The First Three is dad-of-two Joseph George’s first comic book in a series aiming to reveal the unknown exciting adventures of ‘action heroes’ in the Bible - starting with the giant slaying King David.

Born out of a life-long passion for Marvel and DC heroes, Mr George - who works as ministry associate in Kinmel Bay church and as a chaplain in Coleg Llandrillo’s Rhos-on-Sea and Rhyl campuses - hopes to engage a new generation of comic book fans and introduce them to the works of the ‘Good Book’.

Mr George, 46, said: “With so many misconceptions about Christianity being sissy or for some old ladies singing with dusty hats in a decrepit church, the comic seeks to challenge that perspective and show that the Bible contains action, adventure and heroic figures who can perform acts that would inspire and impress male and female alike.

"Looking at heroes like Captain America and Thor from The Avengers from a Christian perspective there’s a lot of similarities. They sacrifice themselves and do good in the battle against evil -it all points to a saviour figure, much like Christ."

Born in London and raised in Nigeria, Mr George first moved to North Wales as a student at Bangor University to study banking, insurance and finance before settling down with wife Sian in 2010 - after they met at a Christian Concert in St Asaph Cathedral - and their two children Alaw, six, and Caleb, two.

As well as an comic book author, Mr George is the founder of Fullness of Life Ministries – through which he has ministers in 18 countries across Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America.

He has also used rap to reach younger audiences, and was featured on BBC's Songs of Praise in and has also released four EPs and two albums under the name Joey G.

His latest venture was inspired by a Conwy Business Centre scheme which put him in contact with an Indonesian artist called Dimas Yuli - who works under the name ‘John’ - who provided the artwork for his script. He is currently in the process of writing a Welsh language version of the comic, with hope of making it available in more languages in the future.

Taken from the Old Testament’s Book of Samuel – which charts the rise of shepherd David to the throne of Israel after killing the giant Philistine Goliath - the comic finds the celebrity hero as a fugitive living in the wilderness where he is joined by a rag tag group of 37 outcasts who go on to perform extra-ordinary feats.

Mr George added: " The philosophy behind what I do with the ministry is "reaching the lost, encouraging the Saints", and whether it's through music or co mics I'm always seeking to advance the Christian message and to help the disadvantaged.

“It’s important to try and reach the younger generation through new mediums. Children these days are very visual and don’t necessarily like things that are too wordy, so I felt like a comic book would reach them in the best way.”

David's Mighty Men is expected to be released on Amazon in the near future, and is currently available from fullnessoflifeministries.org.
