VOLUNTEERS from Poole Lifeboat Station were called to rescue two people and their 24ft yacht after it had ran aground on Saturday evening.

The crew launched and found the stricken vessel at Stoney Island, which is a patch of stone inside the entrance of the harbour.

On arrival, the tide was flooding, so the lifeboat ensured the people on-board were well before the tide came back to tow the vessel free.

A lifeboat volunteer was transferred across on-board and checked for any ingress of water inside the boat as the tide came back.

With the vessel safe alongside, the lifeboat crew returned back to station, refuelled and made the boat ready for service.

Earlier on Saturday, both Poole Lifeboats were requested to launch by the UK Coastguard to search for a missing person.

They worked in parallel, searching along the coast from Sandbank, Bournemouth, to Boscombe then on to Southbourne.

The Coastguard rescue teams from Southbourne and Poole scoured the shore and coordinated an intensive search, but nothing untoward was found so the lifeboat crews were stood down and returned back to station.
