ESSENTIAL repair work will be carried out on Towngate Bridge in Poole as part of the multi-million pound project ongoing at the Hunger Hill junction. The bridge will be closed in both directions from 8pm on Saturday until 6am on Monday to enable bridge joints, waterproofing and resurfacing works to be carried out. On Sunday, the Holes Bay Road approach to Towngate Bridge will also be resurfaced.

While the repairs are taking place, the whole Hunger Hill junction will be resurfaced, including the junction with Lifeboat Quay (Asda etc.) and Towngate Bridge. To enable these works to be carried out a number of road closures are required.

There will be three consecutive closures on West Street between Hunger Hill and Marston Road from Monday, April 29, until Wednesday, May 2, 7pm until 6am. This will also include:

• a southbound-only closure of Towngate Bridge

• no access to Towngate Bridge northbound from West Quay Road

• no right turn from Holes Bay Road (northbound) into Vanguard Road

• no right turn from Holes Bay Road (southbound) into Lifeboat Quay

• no right turn from Lifeboat Quay into Holes Bay Road

From 7pm on Thursday, May 2, until 6am on Friday 3, the above three no right turns will continue while resurfacing is carried out across the mouth of Lifeboat Quay.

From 7pm on Friday, May 3, until 6am the following day, Holes Bay Road will be closed northbound between the junction with West Quay Road and the junction with Lifeboat Quay.

Lynne Wait, interim engineering manager, BCP Council, said: “The works at the Hunger Hill junction are moving into the final stages of the programme and the bridge and resurfacing works are the next key milestone in this major infrastructure project.

“We have carefully reviewed all the plans with the contractor to try and minimise the impact on local people. Most of the work is being carried out at night to minimise the disruption to businesses and road users ensuring businesses can continue to trade. Residents who may be affected by noise will be notified of the works via a letter drop and diversion routes will also be in place for HGVs.

“We are still on budget and on schedule to complete the main Hunger Hill improvements in June 2019.”

Wider works are continuing to take place on West Street and West Quay Road, including the completion of the links for pedestrians, cyclists and other road users from Hunger Hill to Poole Bridge plus improvements to public spaces, and these works will continue until 2020.
