TALENTED students from two Dorset schools will take part in regional finals of the national Rock Challenge competition.

Teams from Queen Elizabeth’s School in Wimborne and Bournemouth’s Elm Academy are in training for the events, due to take place in the week after Easter at Portsmouth Guildhall.

Elm Academy will compete on Tuesday April 23 against eight other teams from as far afield as Hertfordshire, West Sussex, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

QE performers will take to the stage on Friday April 26 against 11 other teams from Buckinghamshire, West Sussex, East Sussex, Hampshire, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire.

More than 20 Rock Challenge and J Rock qualifying events have already taken place across the south of England, involving thousands of young people, teachers, and members of the local community.

The Rock Challenge is an opportunity for young people to perform in a professional venue.

This experience encourages an adrenalin-based high gained through performing, rather than using tobacco, alcohol or other drugs, as well as providing proven and evidenced benefits above and beyond these original objectives.

The teams of students who compete in Rock Challenge spend months preparing a stage show to reflect the message that young people can get a natural high from performing, rather than drink or drugs.

Each team produces an eight-minute performance on a subject of their choice. Pupils are involved in all aspects of their production, from set design to lighting.

The southern finals will take place across five days with more than 3,600 students taking part.

Event manager, Charlotte Payne, is looking forward to the spectacular shows.

She said: “We have seen some outstanding performances this year and I cannot wait to see what the schools bring to the stage for our Southern Finals.

“The spirit and passion of the students this year has been amazing and I think every student, teacher and community member should be very proud of all they have achieved this year.”
