A SPECIAL day of free events is being held to celebrate the £900,000 'Durlston Pleasure Grounds' project.

This initiative, which is being carried out over the next three years, involves rangers, artists and other specialists working to create a landscape which is educational and accessible for all.

It is hoped the Dorset County Council-backed project will eventually make Durlston Country Park, near Swanage, one of the best places in the country for people with disabilities or reduced mobility to enjoy wildlife and the countryside.

Project leader Ali Tuckey said: "The day will be a great opportunity to meet the project team and our dedicated volunteers who have worked so hard to bring this project to life, so come along, get your hands dirty, and celebrate with us."

Visitors of all ages will have the chance to meet heavy horses Fleur and Celine and find out how they are helping with woodland management work.

They will also be able to try their hand at woodland crafts, take a stroll to find out about the past, present and future of Durlston’s historic landscape, and volunteer with a ‘mini work party’. Visitors will also be able to find out how to get involved with the ‘Everyone Needs a Shed’ project and how a new lift-share scheme will help people without access to transport get to the park.

A county council spokesman said: "The Victorian landscape and features will be enhanced, inspired by Victorian owner George Burt’s vision for people to ‘Look round and read great nature’s open book’.

"Plantings and habitat management will benefit wildlife and the tranquillity of the area will be maintained, creating opportunities for play, discovery and creativity, along with a base for training and volunteering."

The project will enhance Durlston’s Grade II-listed Victorian landscape for nature, history and the local community, supported by a £900,200 National Lottery grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and The National Lottery Community Fund.

The free open day is scheduled for Friday, April 12, from 11am-3pm.
