A NEW family-run bakery is set to open its doors at the site of a popular former cake shop in Southbourne this weekend.

Tasty Bakes will officially open in Southbourne Grove on Saturday at the site formerly occupied by Elizabeth’s cake shop which closed suddenly in February 2017.

Martyn McCauley, 43, will be running Tasty Bakes along with his wife, son, mother and even his teenage daughter will be getting involved when she completes her GCSEs in July.

Martyn previously ran the Cottage Loaf Bakery in Moordown after taking it on from his father Terry McCauley.

Terry opened his first Cottage Loaf Bakery in Castle Lane, Bournemouth, in 1973. He then went on to open another five shops in Moordown, Winton, Northbourne, Kinson, Poole, and another two in Charminster before shutting the business in the late 90s.

Martyn revived the Moordown shop in February 2017 before closing it last month.

He said he had been considering going down the commercial route before being approached by the landlord of Elizabeth's at Wimborne Market and deciding to start afresh under a new name.

He said: “When we came here it was sort of a no-brainer, I knew of the Southbourne area because I went to St Peter’s School. It’s changed a lot and we went up and down the street and spoke to people and they said it’s an up and coming area.”

“We’re getting a lot of people walking past and enquiring about it. If I had a pound for every time someone as asked us what’s happening, I’d be able to retire,” he added.

The shop will sell traditional breads, sourdough, traditional cakes as well as more modern treats.

Martyn and his family are well-known for their jam doughnuts at Wimborne Market where they can sell anywhere between 60 and 100 on Fridays and Saturdays.

The new shop will be open Mondays to Saturdays between 8am and 5pm and Martyn said he will also continue to sell cakes at Wimborne Market.
