AN ELDERLY woman was targeted by a cruel distraction burglar at her Bournemouth home last week.

The woman was at her address in Redbreast Road at around midday on Sunday, March 10, when a man knocked on the door. He told her he had been on the roof of a neighbouring home when he noticed a loose tile on her roof.

The victim said she had no money to pay him for the work and would need to go to the bank. The man offered to take her card to the Co-Op to get cash for her. After the victim made him a cup of tea, he left with her card but didn't return.

Police investigating the offence say the criminal left a set of large ladders outside the victim's address.

Enquiries are underway to establish whether the bank card has been used.

The offender is described as white and aged around 30 years old. He has a pale complexion and carried a note book in his hand.

Detective Constable Luke Davis, of Bournemouth CID, called for anyone who spotted a man acting suspiciously in the Redbreast Road area on Sunday to contact him via 101 quoting occurrence number 55190036751.

"I am also keen to hear from anyone who may have been approached by a man in a similar manner," he said.

“A set of ladders were left at the scene. These were very bulky and heavy and may have been stolen nearby by the offender.

"I would ask anyone who may have had ladders stolen in the area recently to please get in touch.

"Finally, I would like to ask residents to be vigilant and not be forced or coerced into commissioning work by people who turn up unexpectedly, even if you are told it's urgent."
