A BANK in Wimborne is going to close its doors this spring.

Barclays has announced its branch in The Square will shut on Friday, May 31.

The banking giant said over the past 12 months, 42 per cent of Barclays customers in Wimborne have been using neighbouring branches.

It said that they had identified just 129 customers who used the Wimborne branch “exclusively” to carry out their banking.

Barclays said overall the number of transactions had decreased over the past 24 months and 80 per cent of their branch customers were using other ways to bank including online or by phone.

It also said that there had been an 18 per cent rise in customers using alternative ways to bank since 2012.

Barclays said: “Before we make the decision to close any branch, we think carefully about how it has been used so far. We consider how many customers have been visiting, what kind of transactions they've been making, and all the other ways they've been choosing to bank with us. We also take into consideration the availability of other branches in the wider community.”

It said over the past year, 3,243 customers had used the branch for personal banking at least three times while 880 people had used it 12 times or more.

While 470 customers had used the branch for business or corporate use at least three times and 183 had used it 12 times or more.

Customers have been advised to use Barclays banks in Broadstone, Ferndown or Poole High Street.

In January, the Daily Echo reported five branches of Santander across Dorset and the New Forest have been earmarked for closure.

Branches in Boscombe, Broadstone, Parkstone and Dorchester are due to shut along with the Lymington premises.

The Broadstone branch will be the first to close on May 9.
