A TEENAGER caught driving at almost double the speed limit has been given points by magistrates.

Joseph Peter Dyer, of Solent Way in Milford on Sea, appeared at Poole Magistrates' Court last Friday.

The 19-year-old admitted driving a Renault in Hurn Road, Christchurch at 57 miles per hour on August 9 2018. The speed limit along the stretch is 30mph.

Dyer was fined £120 and ordered to pay a £30 victim surcharge and £85 costs.

He was also given six points on his licence.

On the same day, David John Otworowski, 33, was convicted of driving a Skoda in Dorchester Road, Lytchett Minster at 54mph. The limit on the B3067 is 30mph.

Otworowski, of Mary Drake Close in Holbury, Southampton, was caught on August 16 2018. He was told to pay a £623 fine, a £62 surcharge and £85 costs. He was also given six points.

Dorset Police list speeding as one of the 'fatal five', a list of actions a driver can take that make a collision more likely.

Most minor speeding offences are normally dealt with by way of a fixed penalty notice, resulting in three points and a £100 fine. More serious offences are referred to the courts.

The penalty is at the discretion of the court, based on the circumstances of the offence, past record and mitigation. However, it can range from three to six penalty points or a discretionary ban.

There will also be a fine, which is means tested, and can range from £100 to £1,000 for non–motorway offences, and up to £2,500 for motorway offences.
