A SPECIALIST sport and performing arts school in Bournemouth has been graded as Good by Ofsted inspectors.

LeAF Studio School was praised for the "very high standard" of teaching in its specialist areas and for the support and care it offers to its pupils.

Pupils were described as "well behaved" with inspectors adding: "They treat each other with respect and warmth. Bullying is rare. Pupils say there is no place for homophobia, racism or transgender discrimination."

The school, in Kinson, has 458 pupils between the age of 13 and 19 and offers academic study alongside its specialist subjects.

Inspectors added: "The balance of specialist and academic teaching is appropriate. It gives pupils a rounded education while providing time for them to focus on their passion for the performing arts or sport."

The school was urged to ensure pupils know how to improve their work in the future and that the most able pupils are challenged to reach the highest standards in theri academic studies.

The school won the national Rock Challenge competition last year and many former pupils are representing their country in a range of sports.

Principal, Nadine Lapskas, said: "It is fantastic that Ofsted have recognised the unique and passionate community we have built here at LeAF Studio. The report really highlights the great work we do in supporting future performers from across both the sport and performing arts specialisms and we were delighted to read comments about the vision, culture and positive ethos that we have created."

The school joined the Ambitions Academy Trust last year and inspectors noted the rapid progress made since then.

AAT Director of Outcomes Paul Holman added: "It is really pleasing to see LeAF Studio thriving as a result of significant restructuring and the unparalleled dedication of all staff. With the clear vision of the Principal and the support of the Trust there is clearly a very bright future for the talented young students at LeAF Studio."

Trust CEO Sian Thomas said of the report: "It is thoroughly deserved and AAT are so proud of what LeAF Studio achieves for their students."
