CAPTIVATING footage of Bournemouth in the snow during the winter of 1978 has surfaced.

Rod Bean posted the video in popular nostalgic Facebook group, Memories of old Bournemouth & Poole, on Tuesday after discovering it earlier the same day.

Rod, who is 76 and lives in Bournemouth, said: “I’ve been going through some of my old cine films and thought that might be of interest.

“We don’t get a lot of snow in Bournemouth."

The footage was shot by Rod, who was aged 35 at the time, while his then neighbour drove the pair through the streets of Bournemouth in his new Suzuki Vitara.

Rod said: “At the time I remembered thinking this is unusual weather, it might be worth filming this.”

Few cars can be seen on the road with many residents opting to get around on foot instead.

The pair can be seen driving along a very snowy Wimborne Road towards Cemetery Junction and Richmond Hill.

Rod and his neighbour then drive along Bath Road, passing Bournemouth’s former Pier Approach Baths, before heading to the Lansdowne.

Later, children can also be seen sledging at Queens Park.

The winter of 1978 is remembered as one of the worst seen in Britain and was the third coldest of the 20th century.

The footage has been seen by more than 1,200 people, shared over 1,000 times and attracted more than 240 comments.

He said: “I’m surprised how many comments it’s had. It’s nice to think you have brought back a few nice memories because there’s so much doom and gloom.”

The clips ends with footage of the Red Arrows at Bournemouth Seafront later the same year.

Rod, who lived in Worksop for 30 years before moving to Bournemouth, said he has a lot of old films, many of which feature family members which he shares with his grandchildren although he joked “they prefer watching videos of themselves.”

He said he used to buy four-minute cine films for roughly £1.50, which was a lot at the time as during his first job he was earning around £8 a week.

Last August Rod shared footage of Westover Road from 1986 with the Daily Echo.
