A SEVERE weather warning for "very strong winds" has been issued for Dorset.

The warning is valid from Friday from 12pm until 6pm on Saturday.

The Met Office said gales will become widespread later on Friday with many places inland seeing winds of 50mph or 60mph.

Gusts of up to 70 mph are likely around some coasts exposed to the west or southwest.

Some travel disruption is also expected along with short-term loss of power and large waves along the coast.

The winds will be accompanied by heavy rain throughout Friday.

The Chief Forecaster said: "These winds will lead to large waves affecting coasts and the possibility of waves overtopping some coastal routes, especially in the west and south of the warning area. In addition, bands of heavy rain sweeping eastwards on Friday in particular will present an additional hazard."
