A BRAZEN burglar who asked one of his victims for a lift into town has been jailed.

Gavin Thomas Disson, 40, was discovered in the kitchen of a property on the outskirts of Gillingham at 3.15pm on Saturday, October 6 last year.

One of the residents of the address arrived home to find Disson in her kitchen.

The woman, who is in her 60s, asked the burglar what he thought he was doing. He told her he was trying to get a lift into town as he was unable to walk that far.

The victim then called her husband, who was in the garden, so he could give Disson a lift.

However, the husband then noticed two wallets which had been left on a sideboard had been moved. Both were open on the kitchen table. It appeared as if they had been rifled through.

Police say it is not believed any money was stolen.

The man then challenged Disson, who left. He was later arrested nearby.

Earlier this month, Disson, who is of Court Street Close in Tisbury, Wiltshire, was sentenced to two years and five months in prison after admitting burglary.

Detective Constable George Graham, of Weymouth CID, said: “We are committed to bringing burglars to justice and I am glad that in this case we were able to respond quickly and identify Gavin Disson as the offender.

“I would like to take this opportunity to urge residents to make sure they do not leave their homes vulnerable to burglars.”
