PLANNING permission is being sought for a series of improvements to a Bournemouth BMX track ahead of it featuring in the final rounds of a national competition.

An application has been submitted by Bournemouth BMX Club to build a new spectator area, install new safety fencing and carry out repairs to the track.

It describes the work, which would help it meet requirements to host major competitions, as “key” to its long-term sustainability.

In November, Bournemouth council approved plans to remove a row of trees lining the edge of its course due to concerns that it was damaging its surface

And in the same month, it was announced that the Iford Meadows track would host the final rounds of the BMX National Series over the weekend of August 10 and 11.

Now plans have been submitted by the club for a series of improvements which it says will help it meet “modern requirements”.

Bournemouth BMX Club is one of the oldest in the country but it has not been selected to host the National Series for nine years.

A planning statement submitted with its application says: “These improvements will ensure Bournemouth BMX Club can host major events and bring the facility up-to-date with modern requirements.

“These improvements will help to secure the long-term sustainability of the club and the facility.

“Access for spectators at major events is a key requirement and hosting these events is a key part of ensuring the long-term sustainability of the club.”

Included in the club’s plans are for it to repair two berms which it says is required to prevent it continuing to erode.

As well as securing the course structure, the work would double the size of its spectator area.

Its statement adds that the cost of replacing the berm, should it deteriorate to a state where the work is needed, would be about £30,000 and that the outlay “could cause future problems for the club’s viability”.

The application will be considered by Bournemouth council in the coming weeks.
