DORSET Police's No Excuse campaign nicked four alleged drug drivers in just one day earlier this month.

After a vehicle in Pokesdown activated an onboard police ANPR car camera, which showed the driver had been arrested recently for drug driving, officers noticed the driver smelt of cannabis and he was arrested and tested.

After dropping that driver back home they spotted a speeding motorbike and after smelling cannabis again, a drugwipe proved positive for the illegal drug.

Traffic police also made two drug driving arrests.

Dorset Police are now warning drivers that they will monitor those who admit to being regular users of the drug.

"A lot of people we stop say 'It’s ok, it was last night'," said a spokesman. "But it's not. Cannabis or marijuana is usually detectable in bodily fluids for one to 30 days after last use, or even longer. As with other drugs, it may be detectable in hair for several months."

He warned that use of the drug can affect drivers in a number of different ways, including slower reactions, poor concentration and confused thinking, distorted perception, over confidence, resulting in taking unnecessary risks and poor co-ordination.

The police operation also resulted in two drivers being fined for driving without insurance. Both were fined £300 with six penalty points.
