A DEVELOPER’S attempts to overturn a council decision for a block of 10 flats in Bournemouth have been dismissed.

Appellant Libra Homes Limited challenged the refusal by Bournemouth council planners for the scheme in Southbourne.

The case was assessed by a government-appointed inspector, who ruled in support of the local authority’s decision.

The proposed development involved demolishing the existing building, registered as 36 and 36A Southbourne Road, and replacing it with four one-bed and six two-bed flats.

Libra Homes had overcome issues with the impact the development would have had on conservation areas, but failed to address other planning policy breaches, the council said.

A report by inspector Matthew Bale described the premises currently on the corner plot as an “anomaly” in the locality.

His report said: “Overall, the proposal would harm the character and appearance of the area.

“I find that adequate living conditions would be provided for the future residents of the site. However, there would be harm to the living conditions of existing neighbouring residents.”

Bournemouth council rejected the scheme for the same reasons in April last year.
