THE Fordingbridge Society has been dissolved after more than 30 years.

The aim of the group was to encourage high standards of planning and architecture in the town and surrounding villages.

In a statement the society described its demise as a “sad loss for the town”.

It added: “Formed over 30 years ago the society has had a proud history of service to the citizens of Fordingbridge and outlying districts, and many of its achievements are still visible in the town, notably the Millennium Statue outside the town hall.

“Books and brochures orchestrated by the society are available from Fordingbridge Museum.

“As the town developed, and new houses were built, particularly Parsonage Park, the society regularly made known its views on the proposals put forward, as its members were concerned that the character and originality of the town be preserved.

“Its members over the years should be congratulated on the work they have done.”

Society secretary, Dr Edgar Moss, 93, said: “Obviously, after all the work I have put into it I am sorry to see it disappear.

“There is so much work that needs to done with all the new houses being built, the roads are still congested and our work should have been carried on. Unfortunately, we haven’t got the younger generation interested to do so.”
