A MAJOR search operation launched last night after a person was spotted in the sea between Bournemouth and Boscombe piers.

Coastguard officials based at Southbourne and RNLI volunteers from Poole and Swanage joined paramedics on the seafront in stormy conditions after the report was made.

The casualty was quickly found and treated by ambulance crews.

However, there was no sign of the member of the public who had made the initial call. Emergency responders believed the caller had gone into the sea to try to help.

As a result, a search between Boscombe Pier and Durley Chine began.

A spokesperson from the coastguard said: "After several hours of searching the shore and the promenade, nothing had been found.

"All units were then stood down with thanks."
