TWO hectares of heathland near Lulworth was destroyed in a fire on Tuesday night.

Firefighters were called just after 9pm yesterday to put out the blaze.

The fire service said approximately two hectares of land was alight.

Four fire engines, one from Wareham and three from Poole, attended the scene as well as an all-terrain Unimog vehicle.

The fire was extinguished using two hose reel jets, beaters and the Ministry of Defence's water bowser.

Firefighters managed to bring the fire under control just after 10pm. The cause of the blaze is unknown.

The crews remained at the scene for some time damping down the area.
