I READ with interest Mr Oliver’s views on the proposed development north of Dorchester.

I believe that he highlighted the critical issue, that is: who will be in control of any development and whether it will be beneficial to the town?

The town has needs, in particular: a northern bypass, suitable housing so that those working in the town can also afford to live here.

and the necessary education/health infrastructure to support the population growth.

Development, if it meets these needs should be welcomed. The question remains whether it is possible for the new unitary authority to deliver such desirable development?

Even the Brewery Square development, which most agree has been one of the better developments, has sadly disappointed in relation to social housing and improved access from the station.

Bridge House, the much acclaimed social housing, is a scandal already being under black plastic and scaffolding for over two years and a half years for rectification of faults.

Visitors arriving at Dorchester South are still faced with tackling the old foot bridge to access the town.

Whatever development is proposed, the new unitary authority must use all its powers to ensure that promises made by developers are fulfilled and that building standards are maintained.

If they do not feel that they have adequate powers to do this, they need to campaign for greater powers.

Early next year, we will be electing councillors to the new unitary authority and it is important that they understand how important their role will be in ensuring that all development is beneficial to the town. We can complain but it will only be the people we elect who will hopefully be able to influence development.
