THE last time I saw Katie Melua she filled the BIC both capacity wise and musically, but tonight’s show at the Pavilion was a much more intimate affair and all the better for it.

The show was split into two halves with the first portion starting with a solo rendition of If You Are So Beautiful sung in Georgian. This was perfectly complimented by an impressive backdrop of screens that filled the whole of the rear of the stage. The depiction of a fox in a peaceful moonlit field set the tone for a wonderful evening of music. Katie was then joined on stage by her brother and fellow guitarist for Plane Song and then the rest of the band for Belfast.

Katie’s voice is so clear and the sound so well balanced that you could catch every word, something that is more rare than you would expect. The audience were silent during the songs with none of the annoying chatter you get at so many gigs and when you have songs like Nine Million Bicycles they just need to be listened to.

After Just Like Heaven, Katie introduces the Gori Women's Choir to the stage for a five-song segment of the show that is just wonderful.

The choir add a subtleness and tone to the songs without overpowering them that makes five songs far too short, most of the crowd could have stayed and listened to that combination all night.

The second half of the show starts with Katie, the Gori Choir and the band playing Perfect World followed by The Little Swallow. The next forty-five minutes delivered a mix of arrangements with Katie singing solo, with the choir, and a more traditional concert with just Katie and the band.

This was a show of perfect balance between the singers, musicians and the light and sound engineers who collectively delivered an evening that everyone in attendance will remember for years to come.
