A MAN died yesterday being hit by a train at Brockenhurst station.

Only the man’s age, 29, has been released by British Transport Police, who are leading the investigation.

Officers have established the victim’s identity and his next of kin have been notified. His death is not being treated as suspicious.

Train lines between Southampton and Bournemouth were blocked following the incident, with services between the stations delayed or revised into the afternoon.

Yesterday, a British Transport Police spokesman confirmed: “Officers were called to Brockenhurst station at 5.34am this morning following a report a person had been struck by a train.

“Paramedics and colleagues from Hampshire Police also attended, but sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.”

Earlier, a South Western Railway spokesman confirmed: “We have received reports that a person has been struck by a train between Bournemouth and Southampton Central.

“Our response teams are working with the emergency services to assist with the incident.

“In order to allow emergency services access to the railway all power to the track will need to be switched off in the affected area.

“We are waiting for a specialist police unit to arrive on site and carry out necessary investigations before the line can be reopened.

“The earliest this is likely to be complete is 10:30am and until this time no trains will be running through the affected area.”

Replacement road transport was sourced by the rail operator, but because of the time coinciding with the school run, they couldn’t immediately secure as many coaches as they needed for all of passengers.

Speaking in the aftermath of the incident, the rail spokesman insisted: “We will be working hard to obtain further transport and will provide any updates as and when they are available.”

Passengers travelling towards London from Bournemouth and the New Forest were advised to start their journey in Southampton or Eastleigh.

Journeys were delayed well into the evening following the incident.
