TOM Killick admitted he had been “a bit panicked” before Poole Town held off a comeback from Brentwood Town to secure progress in the FA Trophy.

Dolphins triumphed 4-1 but the second qualifying round replay had been in the balance when the visitors pulled a goal back to make it 2-1 in the second half.

Boss Killick told the Daily Echo: “A lack of killer instinct or a bit of misfortune in terms of our finishing meant they were in the game longer than we would have liked.

“Then they suddenly scored a 30-yarder and I was a bit panicked but luckily the players were made of sterner stuff and we made it 3-1 and after that it was a question of how many.”

Victory banked Poole £4,000 and earned them a home tie against Isthmian League Premier Division leaders Dorking Wanderers.

Dolphins were handed a golden chance just five minutes in. Sam House was clumsily felled in the box by Quba Gordon and Richard Gillespie converted from the spot.

Will Spetch had an effort ruled out and House hit the left upright in a frantic opening.

The scoreline remained the same until midway through the second period, when Sam Griffin’s brilliant turn allowed him to lift above keeper Rob Budd and into the net.

Brentwood responded quickly, Alfie Hilton’s thunderbolt from range leaving Dolphins stopper Luke Cairney rooted.

But Poole had breathing space once more when, six minutes later, Charlie Davis’s whipped cross was guided home by House.

Cherries loan ace Jake Scrimshaw then bagged his seventh goal in three games when he slotted calmly into the right corner from Marvin Brooks’s pass.

Dolphins: Cairney, Alawode-Williams, Spetch, Whisken, Leslie-Smith, Brooks, Moore, Dickson (Davis, 74), House (Grange, 83), Griffin, Gillespie (Scrimshaw, 61). Unused subs: Pettefer, Smeeton.

Bashley and Hamble Club shared a 1-1 draw in Wessex Premier on Tuesday, Hugh Dathan scoring for Bash and Coby Wilson for the visitors.

Jamie Beasley’s brace and a Jamie Symes goal condemned Hamworthy United to a 3-0 defeat at Portland United.

Christchurch progressed to the quarter-finals of the Russell-Cotes Cup with a spectacular 8-2 win at Alton.

Shaun Prentice bagged a hat-trick and Max Wilcock hit a double, while Jack Satterley, James King and Brad Cherrett were also on the scoresheet. Alton’s efforts came courtesy of Matt Bunyan and an own goal.

Lymington were scarcely less impressive in thrashing Andover New Street 7-0.

Tim Stephenson and Luke Ansell notched doubles and Mike Gosney, Jake King and Charlie Willett completed the scoring.

In the Southampton Senior Cup third round, Will Tickle and Leon Carbayo-Borges converted for Brockenhurst in a 3-2 home defeat to Hythe & Dibden. Sam Woodward (2) and Filipinos Terzidis netted for the victors.
