CALLUM Wilson believes his England call-up shows Cherries are not being overlooked by the national set-up.

The 26-year-old striker could make his senior international debut when the Three Lions take on the United States in a friendly at Wembley Stadium tomorrow (8pm).

No Englishman has scored more goals than the Cherries frontman this season. Wilson has struck six times, placing him alongside Harry Kane, Glenn Murray and Raheem Sterling.

Should he feature in the contest – a farewell for England’s record goalscorer, Wayne Rooney – Wilson would become the second serving Cherries player to represent the senior national side.

Midfielder Lewis Cook was the first to do so, coming off the bench against Italy during a friendly in March.

Steve Cook has also been linked with an England call-up. The defender was reportedly being closely watched by national boss Gareth Southgate.

Asked whether he felt more of Cherries’ squad deserved to join him, Wilson told the Daily Echo: “Of course. We have been playing well and are in a good league position.

“Saturday was disappointing but I am sure that the players in the squad will be working hard.

“Given Lewis and I have been called up, it shows Bournemouth players are being acknowledged and recognised, so, if their performances warrant it, then they will be in.”

Wilson has received Twitter messages from the likes of Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker following his selection – a duo with 143 caps and 78 goals between them.

“It was nice to receive messages from people like that,” said the Cherries hotshot.

“They are legends so it was nice for them to congratulate me. I used to watch all the England games and still do. I looked up to the whole squad.

“I remember the Heskey and Owen partnership and things like that. It will be good to be a part of it and enjoy the experience.

“Any player wants to get recognition for their country and I’m the same. I am going to go and enjoy the experience and I am sure it will be a good one.

“It seemed a long way away but, if you work hard, it proves anything is possible.”

Wilson featured for England under-21s under Southgate against France in November 2014. He replaced now England captain Kane after 66 minutes during his solitary appearance for the Young Lions.

“It was a brief cameo and, hopefully, I can build on that now and try to get the senior cap," said Wilson.

“I am not there yet. There is a long way to go but it will be amazing if it happened. Fingers crossed.”

Midfielder Lewis Cook may get match minutes tomorrow when England under-21s visit Italy in a friendly.

Alex Dobre could turn out for Romania under-21s against Belgium, while Harry Arter – on loan at Cardiff – may feature for Republic of Ireland against Northern Ireland.
