Christmas has come early for Dorchester shoppers as it has been announced that the town will offer free parking in December.

It has been revealed that council-operated car parks and on-street parking in Dorchester will be free of charge all day on the last three Saturdays before Christmas, as well as on Christmas Eve.

West Dorset District Council and Dorset County Council agreed to this scheme at the request of the Dorchester Business Improvement District (DBID).

Phil Gordon, Project Director of DBID, said: “It’s still very tough out there for the high street businesses. They have had a lot of challenges in recent times with a weak economy, rising business costs and the ever-present threat of people doing their shopping online.

"These free days in Dorchester’s car parks and on-street parking mean a more leisurely shopping experience for visitors and that rare treat of not having to rush back to the car before your ticket runs out. I love it and would like to thank the councils for their cooperation.”

This initiative will potentially give a great boost to the towns businesses during the important trading period running up to Christmas and attract visitors from further afield to do their Christmas shopping in Dorchester.

Cllr David Taylor, Mayor of Dorchester, said: "What a brilliant opportunity to give our town a welcome shot in the arm at these difficult trading times.

"Dorchester has always offered a warm welcome to visitors, residents and sightseers in our historic town and our independent retailers offer a variety of products and experiences which are unique to our town."

Neil Strudwick, DBID Chairman, said: "It is said that the high street is dying, I think that Dorchester is proving that wrong with its business strength and opportunities like this.

"Car parking charges have been a local issue in recent times so what a wonderful time to take advantage. I feel that the town has such a vibrant energy at the moment, these are exciting times for Dorchester.

"I am sure it will all add to an even more magical and friendly Christmas shopping experience in our county town. Thank you to the councils and happy Christmas."
