A BOURNEMOUTH resident has created a tribute to the armed forces in his front garden to mark Remembrance Day.

Robert Skerten, who lives in Wick village with his partner Laura Quinn, said: “I think in today’s society everyone is so busy and we forget to stop and think about the things people have done for us.”

The tribute depicts a man in a Home Guard uniform on a union flag accompanied by a sign adorned with poppies that reads ‘Lest We Forget’.

It was installed earlier this week and will remain in place until Sunday evening.

Mr Skerten said: “I wanted to embrace all armed forces in all conflicts and not just the Great War which was terrible.”

He said the reaction from passers-by had been “heart-warming” with many people stopping outside his house or knocking on the door to praise him for his efforts.

“Some people have called him Colonel Mustard and others have called him Private Peaceful. We’ve had a few names thrown at us, he’s been very popular.”

He added: “It’s a nice thing to do and hopefully it might encourage a few people to turn up on Sunday.”
