BOURNEMOUTH'S Light Up the Prom event has been postponed due to the weather.

The annual event was due to take place at Pier Approach tonight from 7.30pm. It will instead be held on Friday, November 23.

A yellow weather warning for heavy rain and wind has been issued by the Met Office and will be in force from 1pm until just before midnight tomorrow.

The Met Office said rain will be accompanied by strong winds with gusts of 50mph possible inland with 60mph possible around some coasts.

The memorial event, which raises money for Bournemouth Hospital Charity and Macmillan Caring Locally, pays tribute to people who have died.

Hundreds of people usually turn out for the poignant event which begins with two minutes of silent reflection as hundreds of lights illuminate the prom. This is followed by a fireworks display.

Posting on Facebook, a spokesperson said: “We regret to announce that, due to the dangerous high winds expected on this coming Friday evening, we have been advised, in the interest of safety, to postpone Light Up the Prom until Friday 23 November.”
