A WOMAN was found slumped in the middle of one of Bournemouth's busiest roads with serious head injuries during this morning's rush-hour.

The lady, in her 30s, was discovered on the westbound carriageway of the Wessex Way - and detectives believe she had been travelling in a moving vehicle immediately before being found.

Dorset Police, who closed the carriageway for nearly five hours afterwards, quickly launched a full investigation and they are now anxious to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident.

The victim was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital, where she received further treatment for injuries police describe as "serious" but "not life-threatening."

A 32-year-old Bournemouth man who was arrested following the incident on Thursday has now been released under investigation as enquiries continue.

A vehicle had also been recovered by officers.

Detective Inspector Kim Goodenough, of Bournemouth CID, said: "We have launched an investigation into what happened and I am appealing to anyone who saw the incident, or witnessed anything suspicious immediately prior, to please contact Dorset Police.

"In particular, I would urge any motorists with a dashcam fitted who were travelling along the Wessex Way around the time to review their recordings and report anything that could be relevant to us."You may have vital footage that could assist with the investigation."

Police, who were initially called to the scene at 9.12am, closed the westbound carriageway of the Wessex Way - just before the Cambridge Road roundabout - until after 2pm.

Bournemouth Echo:

After the woman was taken to hospital, specially-trained collision investigators thoroughly examined the scene.

During this time significant delays built up on surrounding roads.

Det Insp Goodenough said: "I would like to thank motorists for their patience during the road closures, which were entirely necessary to allow us to investigate what has happened."
