A NEW action group is already formulating plans to enhance the community spirit in their village.

Residents and businesses in Highcliffe have joined forces to form the new organisation, which aims to provide more events and ensure the high street survives.

Highcliffe Action Team (HAT) met for the first time in late-August, with 35 people in attendance, and has started work on several ideas to promote the village.

The first initiative attempts to address the Christmas lights along Lymington Road. Collection tins have been placed in 30 high street traders to build funds so the group can improve this year’s festive display.

Jane Dean, HAT communication officer, who lives and works in Highcliffe, said: “It’s rewarding to be working with such a vibrant and energetic group of people, who have Highcliffe’s best interests at heart.

“We need to see changes made to the area, in order to stay relevant and in particular to keep the high street alive.”

HAT are working to improve the area’s presence on social media. Highcliffe’s community Facebook page has more than 1,000 followers.

Early support for the organisation has been provided with financial backing from large Highcliffe-based businesses Hoburne Group and the Chewton Glen Hotel.

Since the initial August meeting, which took place at Highcliffe Golf Club, a Walkford and Highcliffe in Bloom group has been formed by volunteers.

Ideas in the pipeline for 2019 include a music festival weekend on the cliff top alongside The Cliffhanger Café, the introduction of a land train and events at Easter and Halloween.

Ms Dean added: “Next year, we hope to introduce more events and festivals to the area, with the valued support of the Hoburne Group and the prestigious Chewton Glen Hotel.

“We are making real changes, but taking things one step at a time, commencing with this year’s Christmas lights in Lymington Road.

“We are a community of local residents and businesses working together to achieve one common goal - a better Highcliffe.”

The next HAT meeting takes place on Thursday, December 13 in Highcliffe Library at 2pm.
