A BOURNEMOUTH councillor has spoken about security for the town's Jewish community after 11 people were murdered in a synagogue in Pittsburgh.

Cllr Lawrence Williams said "a lot goes on behind the scenes" to protect people in the town.

He said members of charitable organisation The Community Security Trust are active in Bournemouth.

Cllr Williams, one of six Jewish councillors in the town, added: "It is extraordinary that we have to do this but we do it for a good reason.

"The incident in Pittsburgh was shocking and we don't want it to happen anywhere else."

Faith leaders have called on communities, political leaders and authorities to come together after a gunman opened fire in a synagogue in Pittsburgh on Saturday, killing 11 people.

The horrific attack took place during a baby-naming ceremony at the Tree of Life Congregation. At least six other people – four of them police officers – were wounded in the incident.
