FOUR more homes are for the chop in Westbourne as part of a major council housing project.

Bournemouth council has applied to knock down the two detached homes at 8 and 14 Prince of Wales Road, and two semi-detached homes at 10 and 12 between them.

The site would then be levelled to match that adjacent at 133-139 Princess Road, the site of four buildings for which demolition permission was granted in August.

The borough plans to build blocks of one, two and three bedroom flats “with a particular focus on affordable housing provision”, as well as a 20-room family hostel with communal facilities.

All three of the buildings due to be knocked down in Prince of Wales Road are former hostels.

The borough has been criticised in recent years for what is perceived as slow progress building new affordable and council homes.

Councillor Robert Lawton, cabinet member for housing, has told the Echo the scheme is “a fantastic opportunity to provide much-needed homes of mixed tenure in the borough”.

The council says architects are currently working on designing the new scheme and it plans to hold a public consultation this Autumn, and submit a planning application in December if all goes smoothly. A tender document prepared by the council earlier this year states that work must be completed by 2022.
