THE NEW Forest's open-top bus tour has had its best-year ever, with nearly 40,000 people taking a turn about the forest over the summer months.

This equates to a 15 per cent rise in journeys and, says the National Park Authority, has saved over 261,000 private car miles.

Operated by morebus in partnership with the park authority, the tour offers an audio commentary about the area’s culture and history, as well as spectacular local views.

Visitors on the tour contributed an estimated £636,000 to the local economy while stopping at local villages and attractions.

The park's deputy chairman Edward Heron said: "This is great news for the New Forest, reducing the impacts of congestion and carbon emissions on the National Park’s landscapes. By encouraging visitors and residents to travel without a car, we can help protect its fragile beauty for future generations."
