AN exhibition looking at life in 1960s Christchurch has opened at the Red House Museum.

Rock On Saturday is a nostalgic look back to the 1960s with artefacts and costume from the period, as well as a number of never-seen-before photos from the museum’s own collections.

One part of the exhibition looks back on the Bure Club, which was situated on the site where the Sandpiper pub now stands on Bure Lane, Mudeford.

It was set up by a group of local teenagers who started a small record club which by the mid 60s was hosting headline acts such as Jerry Lee Lewis, John Lee Hooker and Gene Vincent.

The Beatles were also scheduled to perform at the Bure Club in 1963, but within months their rapid rise to fame meant the Fab Four were able to buy out their remaining club dates for sell-out concerts at far larger venues.

The exhibition showcases a number of photos of various gigs and events at the club and explores some of the fashions popular with youth culture at the time.

"This exhibition has been a joy to bring together", said Red House Museum community manager, Laura Bullivant.

"It has involved working with a fantastic team of local volunteers who, through their hard work, commitment and local knowledge, have produced a stand-out show that absolutely brings our local heritage to life.

"We are confident that this exhibition will be the first of many projects to bring local people together to tell the more recent history of the town. Within just a few days of opening, it has been a hit with young and old alike."

Volunteer, David Green, said: "From the comments we have received from the public, I feel we have really fulfilled the brief of putting together an exhibition to make our customers smile. "The community and all who live in it are our customers and we will continue to have a diverse number of exhibitions to keep them both interested and educated about the area that we all live in."

Rock On Saturday runs at the Red House Museum and Gardens in Christchurch until Saturday November 10.

Admission is free, but donations are welcome.
